Will Gw Alter Its Mascot?

George Washington University has announced its change of nickname to the Revolutionaries, replacing the “Colonials” name used by its athletic teams. The university enlisted students, alumni, and staff to participate in the announcement. The mascot, George 1, will remain George Washington’s head, which a uniformed student wears. The full adoption of the Revolutionaries moniker will be implemented during the 2023-2024 academic year.

The university declined to take a stance on changing the mascot after the election but told the GW Hatchet that the leadership of the University will continue. The university’s official guiding principles released in the 2021-2020 academic year stated that the university plans to fully adopt the Revolutionaries as its nickname in the 2023-24 academic year.

The new team name, Revolutionaries, will be used instead of the Colonials, which had been the sports team’s name since 1926. The university’s president, Mark S. Wrighton, and Chuck Todd of NBC News, a George Washington alum, unveiled the new logo for the Revolutionaries name, which will take effect for the 2023-24 school year.

The change comes amid a reckoning of the fraught between the Colonials and the Revolutionaries, with the former being the current name used by the athletic teams. The university’s new mascot, George 1, will remain the same, embodying creativity, passion, and change-makers.

  • “America is bad, America is bad, America is bad”. That’s the overarching theme and attitude that’s been drilled into the heads of our youth. 🤦🏻‍♀️ My own eight-year-old daughter asked me, “mom, if they hate American history and values so much, why do they live here?”Good question, girl. Good question.

  • I appreciate the work that Campus Reform is doing. I generally enjoy your articles. Sometimes though, I feel like screaming and smashing the computer. The scientific fact that the human brain isnt fully developed until at least 25 becomes more clear after each one of your articles. Love God. Love People.

  • The “Colonial” fought for freedom from dominion by an unjust empire. What you oppose is imperialism, not colonists: that’s what a colonial is – a colonist. Why would any American oppose that? Wait, if you oppose those who fought for freedom from British rule – the colonials, does that mean you support the rule of Great Britain as imperialist colonizer of North America and the world?

  • I think that we should change the name of the Caribbean Sea. The Carib people were a very fierce people, who came from the mainland South America and conquered the peaceful Arawaks that were living there. In fact, the word “cannibal” came from the Arawakan name, Caniba, for the Carib people, due to their taste for human flesh. I find it all very offensive. Imagine…..glorifying a people that took slaves and ate human flesh by naming one of the most beautiful bodies of water after them. Disgusting.

  • This pisses me off i am Canadian and went to visit my old highschool (international private school) and team was called the Crusaders but got there to see they changed the name because it was offensive, will be never going back and my kids will not be going to it no matter how good the schools academic standing is

  • I find people that identify as college students while you are unable to form a sentence without using “um” and “like” very offensive to educated people. Also, with their tones of voices they commonly spoke with, I can’t tell if they are making a statement or answering a question with a question. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • Our forefathers fighting for our freedom were called colonials because they were Colonists… Part of a colony of people. We didn’t come here to steal land. We came here to escape a government that was harsh and cruel. aka The British. We had no freedoms. We couldn’t take it any more. We had to act. And we did. We left for a new country. It makes me sad to know that what this country has stood for ( to so many) now means nothing to too many.

  • The one NPC said George Washington founded the country… WTF..? He was a founding father and the first President. That’s something I think I learned in grade school, and yeah, let’s rename the school after Barry, whose only accomplishment was being the first black President, and he only got that half right. LMFAO

  • Or you could just keep the uni. Mascot, learn from history & not repeat the errors of the past. Hiding things doesn’t make them or the knowledge of past practices go away. These institutions with colourful associations should teach all aspects of history. Not ‘pick & mix’ what is taught. This business of the cult of being ‘offended’ is getting out of hand.

  • Colonialism is offensive, and we rejected Europe’s hold. A George Washington/Founding Father is good. Hippo is awful! That said, let’s stay with the name “George Washington University”, too. The USA is a great nation for dialogue and opportunity, a name change to something truly better is most agreeable.

  • What gullible idiots. If “colonials” are bad, then the Bill of Rights is bad. Like I said, idiots. There was nothing like the Bill of Rights that were inalienable before the the colonists who founded this country. The follow up question needs to be when are you going to give up your civil rights? And idiots, it was no one’s land when the colonists came and not only that, the “natives” killed each other over territory. But to these brainwashed idiots, the “natives” were living in idyllic harmony with one and all…certainly wasn’t eating each other…um wait….yeah, some were doing that…hmmm.

  • Can we please get the State of Oklahoma and OU to change next? Im tired of being associated with cheaters and thieves. Also OSU and Tech need change as well cause you know guns are bad mmmkay. And when are the animals who represent these schools going to get compensated for THEIR name image and likeness? Do I really gotta call PETA to step in‽

  • You have to be very careful about judging people with today’s standards based on past times. R.E.B. Baylor for example supported the Confederacy and allowed the grounds to be used to train soldiers. He also had four slaves. Does this mean we need to change the school’s name? That would be a NO. It was his work and ministry that created that institution and he needs to be remembered for his work. We can always look and see flaws within people. Society will look back on us 200 years from now and do the same. We always need to look at people in the context of when they lived.

  • The YAF is a conservative organization, so of course they’ll assume that GWU is changing the mascot for “fear of liberals.” That may be the case, but we really don’t know. Anyways, the whole Colonials mascot change is a tough one. The Redskins change was a bit more straightforward, but the Colonials one is tough. George Washington is more known for being the father of the country, lead general of the American war for independence, and being the first president of the US and setting many precedents. And of course he owned slaves. All those things need to be taught, but I don’t think that’s a reason to cancel the GW Colonial mascot. It’s the complete opposite error to another error of people who don’t give a crap about learning the bad parts of the history of colonialization.
