In Dark Souls 2, players can aim and cast spells with a catalyst by pressing and holding either L1 or L2. Crosshairs appear, and players can change their right hand weapon to their catalyst. This is particularly useful when trying to aim spells or in Princess.
Console players can aim and lock on targets, but PC players can switch between the two. Binoculars can be used to aim a crossbow from outside of lock-on range, which is particularly useful when trying to target spells. Free aiming works like this: the character aims straight ahead in the direction their body is facing. The vertical axis is controlled by the camera angle, with an lightning spear being a useful tool for targeting enemies close to them.
To aim spells, use the catalyst, where your hand is where the spell hits. Horizontal aim depends on where your character is facing, while vertical aim depends on your camera angle. Using a bow is an easy way to set the target’s horizontal and vertical aim.
The Binox trick involves firing spells from outside of their normal range, but this rule outsmarts moving targets due to the travel speed of standard spells. To aim with binoculars in the left hand and a bow in the right, aim down the sights like you are about to snipe someone. A general rule of thumb is to use your character’s head as a targeting dot, facing whatever you want to hit directly, and tilting the camera up or down until your head is in focus.
